The event
A leading automotive company brings together its top-performing retailers each year for an annual conference and prestigious black-tie awards dinner.
The location changes annually, but 2026 marked a return to Tobacco Dock, following a highly successful awards celebration at the venue in 2017.
The wider event comprised a two-day conference, culminating in an awards dinner for 500 guests on the final evening. The client prefers to host the conference and dinner at separate venues, making location particularly important: both needed to be within easy reach of the delegates’ accommodation, with coach transport provided throughout.
For 2026, guests stayed at two of the City’s luxury five-star hotels, The Ned and Pan Pacific London. That set the benchmark. As an occasion dedicated to celebrating the manufacturer’s very best retailers, the awards dinner needed to deliver the same exceptional standard of hospitality from arrival to final departure.
Having already experienced Tobacco Dock, the client knew the venue could deliver. This time, however, the ambition was to raise the bar even higher.
The Great Gallery’s spectacular 20-metre LED wall provided a new focal point for the evening, while Tobacco Dock’s characterful spaces offered plenty of scope to create an experience that felt entirely distinct from 2017.
Working alongside global experiential agency Spiro’s Brand Activations & Events team, Tobacco Dock’s own expert events team and in-house service partners brought every element together, from food and service to furniture, production and the all-important guest experience.
WHAT WE LOVED
Jazz lounge reception
Live jazz, velvet sofas and free-flowing champagne transformed the vaulted brick arches of North Dock into an intimate and sophisticated arrival lounge.
The Floristry
The Great Gallery was brought to life with abundant greenery. Real foliage cascaded from the historic timber beams overhead, complemented by lush, foliage-filled table centres below.
5* Touches
No detail was too small. From the butter dishes and service ware to the wines and spirits poured throughout the evening, every element was carefully selected to deliver hospitality worthy of a five-star setting.
Why tobacco dock?
Finding a venue capable of delivering an elevated experience was paramount. It also needed to accommodate more than 500 guests and sit within easy reach of the City’s five-star hotels, allowing for seamless coach transfers between the accommodation and awards dinner.
Having hosted the event at Tobacco Dock previously, the client already knew the venue could answer the brief. Its combination of scale, character and flexibility provided an impressive backdrop, while still allowing the creative team the freedom to transform the spaces and give the 2026 event an identity all its own.
Tobacco Dock’s variety of spaces was central to achieving that.
North Dock 1, with its curved brick vaults and historic pillars, became a sophisticated yet cosy jazz lounge for the arrival reception. Velvet seating, soft furnishings and live music created an immediate sense of occasion, with the venue’s extensive furniture collection making it easy to build a distinctive environment within the space.
Guests then moved into the Great Gallery for the main awards dinner. Here, the venue’s industrial heritage was softened with layers of natural foliage and elegant table styling, while the 20-metre LED wall created a dramatic centrepiece for the awards production.
Food and service were equally important. A dedicated menu tasting with Tobacco Dock Food gave the organising team the opportunity to refine every aspect of the dining experience, from the dishes and wine selection to the serviceware used on the night.
By the end of the tasting, the team had confidence not only in the menu, but in the level of detail surrounding it. Every touchpoint had been considered with the same five-star standard expected of the event itself.

The end result
A sophisticated awards night where five-star hospitality met unmistakable Tobacco Dock character.
Seamless coach drop-offs directly outside the venue made for an effortless arrival. From there, guests stepped straight into North Dock’s atmospheric jazz lounge, where the Midnight Blue Trio, velvet seating and flowing champagne set an elegant tone for the evening ahead.
In the Great Gallery, the transformation continued. Lush greenery filled the room, climbing across the timber beams and bringing softness and drama to the historic space. Against it, the vast LED wall created a striking stage for the awards themselves.
Comedian Ed Byrne hosted the ceremony, bringing his trademark energy and wit to proceedings and keeping the evening moving before the celebrations shifted up another gear.
The Function Band provided the finale, filling the dance floor and turning the awards dinner into a full-scale celebration that continued late into the night.
When the final song had played, coaches were waiting to return guests to their hotels, completing a seamless experience from first arrival to final departure.
The result was an evening that felt polished, generous and celebratory at every turn — and a fitting showcase for the client’s very best retailers.
Proof that five-star hospitality doesn’t have to happen in a five-star hotel.
